Badung Environment Agency Shuts Beach Club Drain, Wastewater Flows to Berawa Beach

Local authorities in Badung Regency, Bali, took immediate action on August 2, 2026, by sealing a drainage pipe linked to a beach club after untreated wastewater and foul odors poured into Berawa Beach. The response came after residents filed complaints through the Regent's official contact channel on July 31, prompting the Environmental and Sanitation Agency (DLHK) to investigate the source of pollution.

Field inspections revealed that fluid from the commercial establishment was routed directly into public drainage systems leading to the ocean. DLHK head Made Rai Warastuthi confirmed that agency personnel traced the illegal discharge and coordinated directly with management.

"It was admitted by them as well, so we shut it down and issued an official closure report," said Rai Warastuthi when confirming the enforcement action.

Investigators noted that while the business possessed a valid waste management permit issued by the central government, the authorization strictly restricted wastewater usage to landscape irrigation. Diverting the treated water into public stormwater culverts constituted a direct breach of compliance regulations.

Regulatory authorities deferred direct penalization to the central government since it holds primary jurisdiction over the establishment's permits, though local officials continue strict environmental surveillance.
