Major League Soccer Names LAFC Co-Owner Larry Berg as Next Commissioner, Succeeding Don Garber

Major League Soccer officially announced on Monday that LAFC co-owner Larry Berg will step into the role of commissioner, taking over the position from veteran executive Don Garber. Berg will formally assume leadership responsibilities at the start of next year, while Garber remains onboard as chairman through the conclusion of his contract.

As part of the transition, Berg is required to divest his financial stake in Los Angeles Football Club, a franchise he helped mold into one of the league's most successful and valuable operations since its inception. Garber leaves behind a massive legacy after leading MLS since 1999, expanding its footprint from 10 to 30 clubs and overseeing massive financial valuations worldwide.

"I am honored to lead Major League Soccer into its next era," said Berg in an official statement released by the league. "We have an extraordinary opportunity to strengthen the quality of our competition, develop more world-class players, and continue elevating our place in the global game."

Industry analysts note that Berg brings a robust private equity background from his time at Apollo Global Management, which will be vital as the league targets further commercial expansion. His leadership will be immediately tested by critical upcoming business milestones, including media rights negotiations and collective bargaining talks.

Garber expressed total faith in his successor following the board's decision. 'Having worked closely with Larry over the past decade, I have complete confidence he is the right person to serve as Major League Soccer's next commissioner,' Garber noted.
