Spider-Man And The Odyssey Smash Records, Deliver Biggest Box Office Weekend
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung straight to the top of the charts over the weekend, pulling in a staggering $360 million domestic debut. Combined with the continued box office draw of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which added another $51 million, the two blockbusters powered the biggest box office weekend in history.
The massive turnout easily outpaced the previous domestic record held by Avengers: Endgame, which opened to $357 million in 2019. Internationally, the Sony and Marvel collaboration achieved a global haul of $932 million during its opening weekend alone.
"It reminds me a bit of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, where you had two movies creating this fervor around moviegoing," said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak.
Industry analysts noted that the unprecedented numbers signal a strong theatrical recovery following years of post-pandemic attendance challenges and industry strikes. Theaters have successfully adapted by turning major film premieres into large-scale social events featuring themed merchandise and fan gatherings.
The record-breaking weekend contributes to an overall projections target of a $4 billion summer and a $10 billion year for domestic box office revenues.
