American Fun Is Dying As Costs Surge, Public Spaces Disappear and Health Suffers

Public spaces and recreational venues where Americans traditionally gather are vanishing at an alarming rate as economic pressures mount nationwide. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the United States has lost a fifth of its movie theaters and nearly a third of its bowling alleys since 2001, alongside widespread closures of coffee shops, libraries, and restaurants.

Rising expenses are heavily driving this trend, with restaurant food costs up 38 percent and labor costs up 35 percent since 2019, while liquor liability premiums for bars have surged by up to 40 percent in many regions. Major corporations are also feeling the severe squeeze, as AMC carries over 400 million dollars in annual interest expenses and heavy rent obligations.

"Everything costs more," said Jessica Finlay, an assistant professor of geography at the University of Colorado Boulder. "Cost of living is so much more, and gentrification is absolutely happening."

Health experts emphasize that the loss of these communal hubs carries profound physiological consequences for an increasingly isolated population. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Brigham Young University, noted that chronic loneliness and social isolation carry a mortality risk comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

"We have designed our world, our society, for efficiency and economic benefit, and not necessarily for the thriving and well-being of humans," said Holt-Lunstad, pointing out the severe public health stakes of losing everyday social connection.
