Viral Lombok Culinary Sensation, Residents Queue at Dawn for Cheap Nasi Sasak
A traditional Sasak culinary stall near the Bintaro Fish Market entrance in Ampenan, Mataram, Nusa Tenggara Barat, drew massive morning crowds on Sunday (2/8/2026). Dozens of local residents eagerly queued up after dawn prayer to secure servings of the heavily spiced, home-style local rice dish.
The meal features white rice packed with an array of traditional side dishes, including vegetable urap, coconut-infused egg, sweet coconut tofu and tempeh, spicy krecek, peanuts with anchovies, salted fish, and Lombok chili paste. Wrapped in banana leaves, the food delivers a distinct sweet, savory, and spicy flavor profile unique to the region.
"I came here right after subuh with my husband because I saw viral videos of this place online, and it turned out to be genuinely delicious," said Fitri Ayu, a customer who joined the long morning queue.
Priced at just five thousand rupiah per portion, the stall experiences overwhelming demand, especially on weekends when supplies sell out within a single hour. Owner Masitah stated that she generates hundreds of thousands of rupiah in daily sales within just two hours of morning operation.
Customers frequently purchase multiple portions to share with their families at home, ensuring the small morning stall completely clears its inventory before nine o'clock every morning.
