U.S. Targets Turkish Bank in Sanctions Push, Cracking Down on Iran
The U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions on Friday targeting a small Turkish investment bank and two subsidiaries accused of moving funds for an arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guard. The enforcement action against Golden Global Bank represents the second financial institution hit under "Operation Economic Outcast," a Trump administration initiative designed to isolate Tehran by penalizing its business partners.
Treasury documents indicate that Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi Anonim Sirketi and its subsidiaries facilitated tens of millions of dollars in transactions for the Quds Force. The bank allegedly provided key correspondent banking access, allowing the Iranian regime to move funds internationally through shadow financial networks.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized a strict stance on international compliance during the announcement. "While we hope no more banks will need to be sanctioned, that ultimately depends on how quickly the international community comes to its senses and ceases support of the murderous Iranian regime," said Bessent.
Despite the administration's aggressive posture, experts note that the U.S. has yet to address China, Iran's primary trading partner and top oil buyer. While Bessent maintains that Beijing is not exempt from future penalties, analysts remain skeptical whether Washington will risk major trade disruptions ahead of upcoming diplomatic talks.
Golden Global Bank is Turkey's 35th-largest financial institution, boasting assets equivalent to roughly $517 million. Meanwhile, the European Union formally joined the U.S.-led economic campaign this week, signaling broader international alignment against Tehran's financial networks.
