Buleleng Gemstones Secure Official Geographical Indication, Boosting Global Appeal

Pulaki gemstones from the Gerokgak district in Buleleng, Bali, officially secured a Geographical Indication certificate on May 19, 2026. Issued by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property, this formal recognition grants strict legal protection regarding the authenticity, quality, and unique natural characteristics of the stones.

The certification follows comprehensive field verifications by government teams across artisan centers and the Pura Melanting region. Ketut Suwarmawan, Head of the Buleleng Regional Research and Innovation Agency, noted that the achievement was driven by close cross-sector collaboration between local authorities and academic experts.

"BRIDA berperan sebagai fasilitator yang mengawal seluruh tahapan pengajuan, mulai dari koordinasi dengan Direktorat Jenderal Kekayaan Intelektual hingga pendampingan kepada MPIG," said Suwarmawan regarding the rigorous administrative and scientific documentation process.

Scientific studies conducted by researchers at IAHN Mpu Kuturan Singaraja highlighted that Pulaki stones carry deep spiritual and cultural value linked closely to traditional Balinese ceremonies. Experts emphasized that formal geographical protection is crucial to prevent unmonitored mining and environmental degradation.

Certified Pulaki gemstones are now poised to expand their presence in national and international markets while retaining mandatory conservation protocols. Local government bodies and artisans plan to enforce strict compliance guidelines to protect the region's natural resources.
