India Exam Leaks Ignite Nationwide Protests, Pressure Modi Government

Massive student protests have erupted across India following major leaks in critical medical entrance exams, highlighting a broader youth employment crisis. With graduate unemployment nearing 40%, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration faces mounting pressure to overhaul job creation and education standards.

A wave of nationwide student protests swept across India on July 20, triggered by widespread exam paper leaks that forced a controversial retest of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. Young graduates and job seekers took to the streets in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to demand systemic accountability and better economic opportunities.

The demonstrations reflect a deep-seated frustration over a severe jobs crisis affecting the world's largest Gen Z population, where graduate unemployment among young adults is approaching 40%. Millions of students face intense competition for a limited number of secure medical, engineering, and government positions as private sector wages remain low and job openings scarce.

"I felt for the students because I was a NEET student back in 2018, and the pressure to secure a well-paid job is immense," said 27-year-old Mumbai professional Abheet Mohanty regarding his decision to join the demonstrations.

Economic analysts point out that India's higher education system has expanded rapidly without a corresponding growth in secure, salaried employment opportunities. Alexandra Hermann Prasad noted that the limited supply of stable jobs remains the underlying catalyst for these unprecedented youth-led protests against the government.

In response to the mounting political pressure, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to appoint Pralhad Joshi and establish a special task force. Additionally, the Indian parliament passed a strict anti-paper leak bill imposing jail terms of up to ten years for violators.
