Syria Destroys 42 Chemical Bombs, Major Step in Post-Assad Purge
Syrian authorities have officially begun dismantling remnants of the former regime's chemical weapons program, destroying 42 aerial bombs under international supervision. The milestone operation represents a critical step forward in addressing the dangerous legacy left behind during the country's civil war.
During a UN Security Council briefing on Thursday, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu confirmed that an OPCW inspection team verified the irreversible destruction of the weapons in August. This marks the first verified elimination of chemical munitions on Syrian soil since 2014.
"This is the very first destruction process since we have been liberated from the previous regime," said Ibrahim Olabi, Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations. He further noted that it is the first operation of its kind to destroy chemical materials directly on Syrian territory in over ten years.
Security experts view the ongoing purge as a vital component of stabilizing the post-Assad transition and rebuilding international trust. The cooperation with global watchdogs signals a decisive shift away from the military policies of the ousted administration.
The ongoing disarmament process is scheduled to continue as international inspectors maintain their presence in the region to verify further inventory reductions. Syrian officials have pledged full transparency with the United Nations until all remaining prohibited stockpiles are completely neutralized.
