August Jobs Report Unveils Shocking Twist, Women Grab 98 Percent of Gains

A CNBC analysis of the August 2026 Bureau of Labor Statistics data reveals that women accounted for 158,000, or approximately 98 percent, of the 162,000 net jobs added during the month. While the blockbuster figures surpassed expert forecasts, experts note that the stark divide highlights complex underlying economic shifts.

Women overwhelmingly drove the U.S. labor market expansion in August, capturing 158,000 of the 162,000 total nonfarm payroll positions added. Meanwhile, male employment grew by a modest 4,000 net positions, marking a historic divergence in gender-based hiring trends.

The progressive nonprofit Economic Security Project first highlighted the anomaly within the Friday labor data. According to Indeed Hiring Lab director Laura Ullrich, the widening gap between jobs held by women versus men has climbed to unprecedented levels.

"We are in the midst of a shift," said Ullrich, emphasizing how rapidly the corporate landscape is transforming. "It is changing right before our eyes."

Sector distribution heavily favored industries with high female workforce concentrations, including healthcare and local government education. However, analysts pointed out that robust hiring also extended into typically male-dominated fields like manufacturing.

Despite the headline-grabbing numbers, several economists urged caution when interpreting single-month demographic data. Navy Federal Credit Union chief economist Heather Long noted that month-to-month statistics can exhibit volatility, while other experts warned that the trend might reflect lower-wage role clustering or workers holding multiple jobs.
