US Adds 162000 Jobs in August, Trump Demands Rate Cut and Tariff Threats

The U.S. economy added a stronger-than-expected 162,000 nonfarm jobs in August 2026 while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%. The robust figures have intensified debate over upcoming interest rate decisions, drawing immediate demands from President Donald Trump for the central bank to lower borrowing costs.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday that nonfarm payrolls grew by a seasonally adjusted 162,000 in August, significantly outpacing the 53,000 increase anticipated by Dow Jones economists. Meanwhile, the national unemployment rate held steady at 4.1 percent as the labor force participation rate ticked upward by 0.2 percentage points.

Job growth during the month was notably broad-based, led by restaurants and bars adding 59,000 positions and government education contributing 42,000 roles. Conversely, information-related industries shed 23,000 jobs, signaling early employment pressures tied to artificial intelligence adoption across tech sectors.

"Net, net, the labor market is alive and well and generating thousands of new jobs to help keep economic growth squarely in the plus column," said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at Fwdbonds.

Following the stronger payroll numbers, market traders adjusted expectations toward a potential interest rate adjustment at the upcoming September 15-16 Federal Open Market Committee meeting. Analysts note that upcoming consumer and producer price index reports will serve as the final determinant for central bank policymakers.

President Donald Trump strongly criticized current monetary policy on social media following the release, demanding immediate rate reductions and threatening trade cutoffs with nations maintaining trade deficits. 'High interest rates put the U.S.A. at a very unfair disadvantage, and I won't allow that to happen!' Trump wrote, urging the Federal Reserve board to change course.
