L.L.Bean Rejects AI and Online-Only Retail Trends, Commits to Maine Roots and Print Catalogs
Iconic outdoor retailer L.L.Bean announced this week that it will continue prioritizing its traditional business model, maintaining its longtime headquarters in Freeport, Maine, and avoiding widespread artificial intelligence adoption. Established in 1912 by Leon Leonwood Bean following a hunting trip, the multi-billion-dollar brand currently operates around 60 brick-and-mortar stores across 22 states.
The company recently concluded a four-year, $50 million renovation of its flagship Freeport location, which remains open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Alongside its physical retail footprint, L.L.Bean continues to produce its traditional physical mail-order catalog, despite experiencing annual declines in mailing volume ranging from 10 percent to 14 percent.
'We still believe in our hearts that old-school photography with real products on a real human is the way to go for our brand and our brand's reputation,' said CEO Greg Elder regarding the decision to bypass AI-generated imagery for their seasonal look books.
While many high-profile competitors rush to integrate automation to cut costs and streamline operations, L.L.Bean is remaining on the sidelines due to concerns over environmental sustainability. Elder pointed out that the massive energy and water demands required to power modern computing infrastructure conflict with the outdoor brand's core values.
The company will continue focusing on its personal selling experience and physical retail strengths rather than chasing technological trends that risk undermining its distinctive corporate culture and environmental commitments.
