State Representative Jermaine Johnson and former congressional staffer Sam Skardon announced this week that their Democratic gubernatorial ticket secured support from over 17000 individual donors, raising more than 1 million dollars for the race. The campaign officially launched this massive fundraising effort to challenge the ruling majority party in reliably red South Carolina ahead of the November 3, 2026 election.

Despite the record-breaking number of small-dollar contributions, the Democratic ticket reported having just 172274.52 dollars on hand. Meanwhile, their Republican opponents—Attorney General Alan Wilson and state senator Mike Reichenbach—entered the quarter boasting 860655.52 dollars in available resources, giving them a five-fold financial advantage.

"A record number of supporters have put their own money behind this campaign, and the average gift is under forty dollars," noted a statement released by the Johnson-Skardon campaign regarding their grassroots funding strategy.

Political analysts note that the electoral math heavily favors the Republican Party, as no Democrat has won a statewide election in South Carolina since 2006. Internal GOP rifts and ideological fractures could potentially create openings, though the opposition still holds a commanding financial and historical lead.
