Oil Prices Surge Past $110 a Barrel, Diesel Hits $6 as Strait of Hormuz Attacked
Global energy markets experienced severe turmoil on Friday as crude oil prices surged toward $110 a barrel following a series of military escalations near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced it successfully struck a U.S. naval drone in the vital waterway, while separate projectiles impacted two merchant vessels off the coast of Oman, igniting a fire on one of the ships.
Market data indicates that at least 15 vessels have sustained direct hits from Iranian or U.S. related actions over the past week in the critical trade corridor. The sustained disruptions forced U.S. diesel fuel prices past the historic threshold of $6 a gallon as traders factor in prolonged supply chain bottlenecks.
"The intensification of hostilities in this vital chokepoint presents an immediate threat to international energy security and maritime commerce," noted a leading commodity market analyst following the sudden price jumps.
Shipping companies have begun rerouting tankers or temporarily pausing transits through the Persian Gulf to mitigate risks to crews and cargo. Insurance premiums for vessels operating in the region have escalated sharply in response to the continuous drone and projectile strikes.
Port authorities in the region confirmed that emergency fire-suppression teams were deployed to assist the burning vessel off Oman. Meanwhile, international energy regulators are monitoring reserve stockpiles to determine whether emergency releases will be necessary to stabilize soaring consumer fuel costs.
