Saudi Arabia Shuts Vital Oil Pipeline, Drone Attacks Spark Regional Crisis
Saudi Arabia closed its vital East-West crude oil pipeline on Friday as a precautionary measure following a destructive drone attack launched from neighboring Iraq. The sudden strike caused minor injuries and structural damage near the facility, prompting international concern as the regional conflict enters its seventh month.
The targeted 1,200km pipeline serves as a crucial lifeline for the world's largest crude exporter, allowing Riyadh to bypass the volatile Strait of Hormuz while moving roughly 4% to 5% of global oil supplies. In response to the breach, Iraqi authorities swiftly relieved a regional military commander of his duties and opened an urgent investigation into how the drones crossed from a province bordering Iran.
"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia affirms that it reserves its right to take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and security," stated the Saudi Foreign Ministry, adding that the nation has chosen to hold off on immediate military retaliation to support Baghdad's internal investigations.
Energy analysts note that the pipeline closure compounds an already severe supply squeeze driven by Houthi rebel advances along Yemen's Red Sea coast and the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait. These compounding maritime threats have immediately forced crude benchmarks past the $100-a-barrel threshold, stoking renewed global fears over persistent inflation and climbing borrowing costs.
With vital trade arteries choked on both sides of the Arabian Peninsula, diplomatic channels face immense pressure to de-escalate the unfolding energy crunch before market instability triggers wider economic fallout.
