Houthi Forces Seize Strategic Red Sea Islands, Saudi Security Faces Test
Yemen's Houthi movement has rapidly expanded its territorial control by seizing Mokha, Dhubab, and strategic islands overlooking the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. This strategic advance places intense pressure on a vital maritime trade corridor that has grown increasingly critical to Saudi Arabia as ongoing regional conflicts restrict traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Government sources confirmed that Houthi forces advanced onto Perim Island on Friday following the withdrawal of Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces. The strategic capture of these coastal towns and islands gives the Iran-backed group direct tactical leverage over the narrow shipping channels connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
"These hostile movements directly jeopardize international maritime security and disrupt vital commercial supply lines," stated regional security officials monitoring the escalating conflict.
The offensive coincides with direct drone and missile strikes targeting Saudi territory alongside a strict blockade against shipping linked to Riyadh in the Red Sea. While the Houthis already possessed missile capabilities to threaten the area, ground control of these islands significantly elevates their tactical operational reach.
Saudi military planners face difficult strategic choices as they attempt to prevent the re-emergence of an active conflict theater on their southern border. Government forces and allied regional coalitions continue to evaluate defensive responses to secure critical economic corridors.
