Police Expect More Arrests, Homicide Ruled in Mississippi Woman's Hanging

Jackson police stated Saturday that the investigation into the death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune remains active, with authorities anticipating additional arrests in the coming days. Fortune, a Black woman, was found hanging from a tree in the backyard of an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi, on August 3.

The state medical examiner's office determined Thursday evening that the manner of death was a homicide, allowing law enforcement to execute warrants. Police subsequently arrested 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff, who is charged with murder and scheduled to appear in Jackson Municipal Court by Monday morning.

"This case remains active, and additional arrests will be pending as our investigators continue to follow the evidence wherever it leads," said Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney during a press briefing on Friday.

Chief Brackney confirmed that Ratliff had an association with the victim, though further details regarding their relationship were withheld. Court records show Ratliff is a resident of Jackson, while public defender Andrè de Gruy noted that representation would be handled through the Hinds County public defender's office.

Loved ones remembered Fortune as a mother of four, a star cross-country runner, and a deeply religious person who overcame childhood challenges. State records and jail documents confirm that Ratliff is being held at the Hinds County jail as local authorities press forward with the ongoing criminal investigation.
