Three Beluga Whales Die At Chicago Aquarium, Authorities Launch Investigation Into Sudden Losses

Three beluga whales have died at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium over a span of eight days, including two newly arrived animals rescued from a closed marine park in Canada. Aquarium officials confirmed Wednesday that 20-year-old Rain and 34-year-old Beethoven died despite immediate lifesaving interventions from veterinary staff.

The recent deaths follow the passing of Peekachu, another 23-year-old female beluga who died just weeks after arriving at the facility as part of an international rescue mission. Rain had been transported to Chicago in August alongside several other whales from a shuttered facility in Ontario, while Beethoven was a decades-long resident of the aquarium's pod.

"Necropsies, blood tests and additional exams are underway to help determine what happened," stated the aquarium in an official release addressing the sudden tragedies.

Facility administrators noted that it remains impossible to definitively conclude whether the multiple deaths are directly linked or represent isolated medical events. Animal care specialists continue to provide round-the-clock monitoring for the remaining belugas as international scrutiny over captive marine animal transfers intensifies.

Veterinary teams emphasize that comprehensive diagnostic results will take time to process as experts analyze the complex health histories of each animal.
