Saylor Hayes Parents Arrested, Records Reveal Prior Drug and Child Neglect History in Virginia

John Herb Hayes III and Geordyn Nichole Hayes were arrested in Tennessee on South Carolina warrants following the tragic drowning of their five-year-old autistic daughter, Saylor Hayes, in Pawleys Island. Court records reveal a troubling history of prior child-neglect and drug-related felony charges against both parents in Virginia.

John Herb Hayes III, 70, and Geordyn Nichole Hayes, 31, were taken into custody on Tuesday evening, September 1, 2026, by deputies in Carter County, Tennessee. The arrests followed active South Carolina warrants accusing them of unlawfully placing a child at risk, causing harm, or willfully abandoning a child after five-year-old Saylor Hayes drowned near a Georgetown County vacation rental.

The couple was located following a coordinated surveillance operation by Deputy Kevin Smith and Sgt. Cody Farley on Marion Branch Road, where they arrived in a black GMC SUV bearing Texas registration plates. Authorities confirmed the extradition warrants and transported both suspects to the Carter County Detention Center without incident, where they were held without bond.

"Both suspects were detained without incident and transported to the detention facility pending extradition proceedings," stated a Carter County public information officer regarding the operation.

Newly obtained court records from Virginia indicate that both parents faced prior felony child-abuse allegations involving young children testing positive for controlled substances like methadone and methamphetamine. In July 2023, social services removed two children from their custody after hair-follicle screenings returned positive results for dangerous narcotics.

Geordyn Hayes was also arrested in February 2026 after a deputy found her in an erratic state inside a disabled vehicle with a baby while outdoor temperatures hovered near freezing. The ongoing legal fallout underscores a documented history of parental negligence leading up to the fatal incident in South Carolina.
