US Consumer Prices Accelerate in August, Push Fed Closer to Rate Hike

U.S. consumer prices accelerated in August, while a key measure of underlying inflation posted its largest increase in four months, reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates next week. The Labor Department reported that the Consumer Price Index increased 0.4% last month following a modest 0.1% rise in July.

The broader surge was heavily influenced by a 3.9% jump in gasoline prices and a 9.6% surge in other motor fuels, including diesel. These escalating energy expenses are rippling through the transportation and retail sectors, adding widespread pressure on everyday consumer goods.

"Energy inflation does not stay at the gas station. It travels by truck, airplane and cargo ship into nearly every store in America," said Sung Won Sohn, a finance and economics professor at Loyola Marymount University.

The persistent cost-of-living squeeze has triggered a sharp drop in public consumer sentiment and weighed heavily on political approval ratings. Treasury yields have adjusted upward as financial markets price in aggressive monetary policy tightening by central bank officials.

Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics data confirmed that annual consumer inflation advanced 3.4% through August, continuing to outpace wage growth and reducing inflation-adjusted average hourly earnings by 0.3% over the year.
