Trump Sparks Outrage After Endorsing Irish Reunification, Top Ally Rages

President Donald Trump used a visit to Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday to voice support for the reunification of the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland, breaking traditional U.S. neutrality. Speaking alongside Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, the 80-year-old president claimed that unification would be a great achievement and suggested it is bound to happen eventually.

The 1998 Good Friday Agreement established a fragile peace after decades of conflict, dictating that any change in Northern Ireland's status requires a majority vote from its citizens. Despite this framework, Trump openly pushed for the transition, stating that he and the Irish Prime Minister had actively discussed moving the process forward.

"Well, I don’t want to cause any problems, but I will tell you I’d love to see it unified," said Trump during the press conference. "I think it would be a great feather in everybody’s cap if that happened."

British political leaders immediately slammed the comments, with UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch accusing the president of shooting from the hip and creating unnecessary tension. Northern Ireland unionist figures also rejected the remarks, emphasizing that the constitutional future of the region belongs solely to its local population.

While nationalist leaders like Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald welcomed the spotlight on unity, the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the diplomatic friction. The controversy highlights ongoing sensitivities surrounding sovereignty near the approach of the Good Friday Agreement's 30th anniversary.
