Alan Wilson Unveils Major Infrastructure Plan, Pledges South Carolina Road Overhaul

South Carolina Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial nominee Alan Wilson outlined a sweeping infrastructure reform package on Wednesday, centering on neglected secondary roads and local bridges across the Palmetto State. Wilson rolled out the initiative to redirect focus toward the daily transit routes utilized by workers, farmers, and families rather than exclusively prioritizing major interstates.

The proposed reform plan involves a strict audit of the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) via the Families First Audit Initiative alongside running mate Mike Reichenbach and comptroller general nominee Mike Burkhold. Campaign records indicate that the state budget recently allocated $3.2 billion to SCDOT, marking a 15.67 percent increase from the preceding fiscal year.

"If you want to know what matters to South Carolinians, get off the interstate," said Wilson during his policy rollout. "Drive the two-lane roads people take to work. Cross the bridges our school buses use every morning."

Transportation studies from earlier this year place South Carolina among twelve states flagged for poor spending efficiency and substandard road repair conditions. Political observers note that executive initiatives will face significant legislative oversight from the S.C. General Assembly, which historically controls state appropriations and fiscal policy structures.

State records show that Governor Henry McMaster signed an infrastructure funding bill in May incorporating new toll road provisions and fee adjustments. State Representative Joe White recently addressed these systemic challenges in a published column, emphasizing that legislative framework changes remain mandatory to achieve long-term roadway improvements.
