Elena Rybakina Dethrones Aryna Sabalenka, Wins First US Open Title

Elena Rybakina secured her first U.S. Open title and captured the World No. 1 ranking by defeating defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 on Saturday in New York. The victory halted Sabalenka's dominant 19-match winning streak at Flushing Meadows and handed Rybakina the largest prize in Grand Slam history at $5.5 million.

The 27-year-old champion entered the tournament dealing with a lingering foot injury that forced her out of Cincinnati earlier in the summer. Despite landing less than half of her first serves, Rybakina applied relentless pressure with her return game to convert three crucial break points.

'It's tough to find words right now, honestly,' said Rybakina after the match. 'I don't expect nothing like this coming to this tournament. I've been dealing with a little bit with an injury, but somehow everything aligned together on my side.'

Sabalenka, who took home $2.8 million as the runner-up, struggled to find her rhythm and expressed visible frustration throughout the hard-fought encounter. The defeat ends Sabalenka's dominant 99-week reign at the top of the WTA rankings, with the official leaderboard flip scheduled for Monday.

Rybakina's triumph brings her career Grand Slam total to three majors, leaving only the French Open remaining to complete the career Grand Slam set.
