MAGA Senate Candidate Michael Whatley Faces Backlash, Convicted Offender Opens Rally
North Carolina Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley faced intense public scrutiny after a twice-convicted sex offender delivered the opening prayer at his campaign event. Pastor Daimon L. King, a registered sex offender with two prison sentences for crimes involving children, invoked prayers for integrity while opening the rally.
Court records confirmed King's criminal history, which quickly became a focal point of criticism given that Whatley's campaign platform centers heavily on positioning his Democratic opponent, former Gov. Roy Cooper, as being soft on crime. Video footage from the event showed King smiling directly behind Whatley as the candidate addressed supporters alongside Dr. Mehmet Oz.
'The candidate was unaware of King's criminal record and did not organize the event,' a Whatley campaign spokesperson stated to the Associated Press, noting that the Craven County Republican Party handled the local hosting duties.
The controversy unfolds during a high-stakes Senate race that is expected to play a critical role in determining control of Congress. Whatley, the former head of the Republican National Committee, stepped down from national party leadership at Donald Trump's urging to launch his bid for the Senate seat.
Following the conclusion of the weekend event, the campaign continues to navigate heightened media attention regarding guest vetting procedures as the midterm election cycle intensifies across the state.
