T-Mobile CFO laughs at Elon Musk's mobile plans, cites physics

T-Mobile CFO Peter Osvaldik stated on Wednesday at Citi's 2026 Global TMT Conference that SpaceX's cellular ambitions pose no real wireless threat. Osvaldik criticized Starlink's shifting deployment strategies, claiming industry experts are laughing at the proposed mobile roadmap.

While SpaceX executives point to their 650 direct-to-cell satellites as a way to eliminate remote dead zones, urban environments present entirely different hurdles. Satellite signals face significant attenuation and cannot penetrate standard city infrastructure or vehicle windshields.

'You can't get through buildings, walls. You can't even get through a Tesla windscreen,' said Osvaldik. 'You can have 1 million satellites up there with all the spectrum in the world, you can't break the fundamental laws of physics.'

To counter coverage limitations, SpaceX intends to deploy a vast network of small cell stations known as femtocells on residential and commercial rooftops. However, industry critics calculate that matching traditional carrier coverage would require deploying up to 1 billion of these units.

Major telecommunications firms currently generate roughly $600 billion annually in combined revenue. SpaceX has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the feasibility challenges raised by competing telecom leadership.
