OpenAI Rules Out IPO This Year, Altman, Musk & Amodei Warn AI Moving Too Fast
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that his company will not pursue an initial public offering this year, citing growing safety worries surrounding artificial intelligence development. Speaking to Fortune, Altman noted that an IPO at this juncture would be "ill-advised," effectively pushing one of history's most anticipated market debuts to at least 2027.
This announcement arrived on the exact same day that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a proposal urging AI companies to moderate the rapid pace of model enhancements. In a surprising show of industry consensus, both Altman and Elon Musk publicly backed the safety-focused blueprint across social media channels.
"Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same," stated Altman in an online post addressing the proposed three-step deceleration plan.
The urgent shift toward safety protocols comes amid mounting scrutiny from Washington lawmakers and public backlash over automated cyberattacks and power-hungry data centers. Furthermore, an internal researcher's recent resignation—warning that top labs are "gambling with our lives"—has amplified public apprehension regarding unchecked artificial intelligence scaling.
Anthropic has already implemented the first phase of the plan by granting third-party evaluators direct access to inspect its safety measures, while federal regulators continue evaluating additional restrictions on advanced semiconductor exports to foreign adversaries.
