Prediction Markets Hit Supercycle, NFL And Midterm Elections Collide
Prediction markets entered the fall season with record-breaking momentum as sports betting and political forecasting converged this week. Major platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket reported consistent daily trading volumes in the billions following the kickoff of the NFL season and the unofficial start of the midterm election campaign season after Labor Day.
The convergence of these two major drivers creates a critical make-or-break cycle for both established exchanges and newer market entrants. Kalshi recorded a record $2.3 billion in traded volume on the first day of college football, while Polymarket launched high-profile ad campaigns featuring sports icons like LeBron James and Derek Jeter.
"You have a bit of a supercycle occurring right now within the prediction markets," said JB Mackenzie, Robinhood's general manager for futures and prediction markets.
Despite explosive growth, the platforms navigated technical setbacks during opening weekend, including platform outages at Polymarket and a premature market resolution error at Kalshi. Furthermore, exchanges continue to battle state-level regulators who argue that event contracts amount to gambling rather than federally regulated derivatives under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
By the end of the weekend, technical glitches were resolved with user refunds and corrected payouts, while smaller competitors like ProphetX and Novig pushed forward with aggressive revenue targets and expanded sports-and-politics offerings.
