Iranian Commercial Vessel Struck in Hormuz, One Dead in Mideast Escalation

An Iranian commercial vessel was struck off Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz early Sunday, leaving one person dead and three wounded, according to Iranian state media. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations monitor separately reported a vessel hit by a projectile while transiting the vital waterway.

The incident coincides with a broader regional escalation as Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed drone and missile attacks toward southern Saudi Arabia. A projectile also landed in al-Tawwal governorate near the Red Sea border, injuring two individuals and damaging local structures.

"They had no heads," said resident Ahmad Shreim regarding a separate Israeli airstrike in Gaza City that struck a vehicle and killed two people. The Gaza health ministry reported that ongoing airstrikes have claimed numerous lives despite previous ceasefires.

In response to the mounting instability, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi met with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi. El-Sissi urged Iranian leadership to take immediate steps toward de-escalation and halt attacks on Arab nations.

Iraqi authorities officially reopened passenger traffic at key border crossings with Iran, including al-Sheeb and Shalamcheh, following brief closures prompted by drone activity. Trade operations across these crucial border points are scheduled to resume in the coming days.
