Houthi Advance Threatens Vital Waterway, Puts Washington in Major Bind

A lightning offensive by Iran-aligned Houthi militants has enabled them to advance south along Yemen's coast and reach the island of Perim on Friday. This movement puts the group in a position to choke off the Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the mouth of the Red Sea, creating a major new crisis for President Donald Trump as his conflict with Iran continues.

The strategic advance threatens Saudi oil shipments that have relied heavily on Red Sea ports since the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed. Closing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait would constrain roughly 7 percent of global petroleum supplies and about 12 percent of global trade, dealing another severe blow to the international economy.

'Just weeks ago, Trump adopted a strategy of squeezing Iran's economy while keeping military conflict at levels too low to squeeze the American economy,' said Stephen Wertheim, a senior fellow at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. 'The Houthis have shattered Trump's plan.'

Analysts note that Washington now faces a difficult dilemma between committing scarce military resources to push back the militants or leaving regional allies to handle the threat alone. Direct intervention could unravel previous agreements and expose U.S. forces to renewed missile and drone attacks from Yemen.
