The Eastern Time Zone represents the most populous region in the United States, covering parts or all of 23 states, eastern Canada, select Caribbean islands, and Mexico's Quintana Roo state. Historical shifts in boundaries have expanded the zone westward since the Interstate Commerce Commission took over time-zone management in 1938.
