Trump Administration Cuts Medicare Drug Subsidies, Millions of Seniors Face Higher Premiums

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced that the Biden-era Medicare Part D extra premium subsidies will expire at the end of the year and will not be offered in 2027. This decision terminates a program that provided a total of 9.8 billion dollars in financial assistance through 2025 and 2026 to help keep coverage costs down for approximately 23 million standalone plan enrollees.

The cancellation arrives just months after congressional Republicans allowed ObamaCare subsidies to expire, setting up a clash over affordability ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz defended the action on social media by stating that the previous administration gave billions directly to insurance companies and that the market has now stabilized.

"We are stabilizing the market, so this bailout is no longer needed," wrote Oz, adding that premiums will go up by less than 10 dollars for most recipients while many could see lower costs.

However, healthcare policy analysts caution that ending the program removes a vital buffer for vulnerable populations. Juliette Cubanski, vice president at KFF, noted that the program lowered average premiums by 16 dollars a month this year on a 36-dollar baseline.

"At the end of the day, I think what matters to people is how much more or less they have at the end of the month after all their bills are paid," said Cubanski, emphasizing that premium hikes will add pressure on stretched household budgets.
