Teen Lifeguard Recounts Daring California Ocean Rescue, Claims Hero Status
A 16-year-old California rookie lifeguard made national headlines after executing a daring ocean rescue that saved a 10-year-old boy from pounding surf at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz on July 25. Ryder Williams spotted young Nathaniel Rai swept off his feet in ankle-deep water before sprinting through 8-to-10-foot waves to reach the child.
The rescue quickly escalated into a desperate struggle against the tide as the child went limp and heavy waves blocked any immediate path back to shore. Williams focused on holding his ground and keeping both of them from being dragged further into the Pacific Ocean until his partner arrived to assist with the extraction.
'As I grab the child, he goes limp, so I'm thinking about if he's unconscious or not, that I really need to go in,' said Williams while describing the terrifying moments in the water.
Following the successful rescue and reunion with the boy's grateful father, Sumit Rai, Williams declined to take the rest of the day off to process the event. Instead, the dedicated teenager climbed right back into his observation tower to resume monitoring beach safety and conduct further water rescues.
Local emergency personnel transported the victims and treated the distressed child for shock and sand ingestion on the shore while investigators logged the incident. Williams later returned to his scheduled watch, performing subsequent safety contacts throughout the remainder of the afternoon shift.
