New Bill In Congress Pushes For 32-Hour Workweek, Overtime Rule Changes
U.S. Rep. Mark Takano and Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced the Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act in Washington this week, aiming to reshape standard federal labor expectations. The legislation proposes gradually reducing the traditional 40-hour workweek down to 32 hours over a multi-year period.
Under the bill, employers would not necessarily be forced to cut employee shifts, but standard overtime pay at a rate of time and a half would kick in for any hours worked past the new 32-hour threshold. Furthermore, the text of the legislation includes provisions designed to prevent companies from lowering total employee compensation or stripping away benefits.
"Work has fundamentally changed, and it is time that labor standards caught up," said Takano in an official statement detailing the reintroduction. He emphasized that the policy aims to ensure modern productivity gains driven by new technology directly benefit everyday American workers.
This marks the fourth time progressive lawmakers have pushed this legislative package since 2021. Analysts note that the measure faces an uphill battle in Congress, given that opposing political parties hold majorities in both the House and the Senate.
Current federal statutory standards for work hours and overtime compensation were originally established decades ago under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Congressional records show that prior iterations of the 32-hour workweek proposal failed to clear committee hurdles during past legislative sessions.
